WHY DOES HYDRATION AFFECT BODY COMPOSITION READINGS?

Body composition scales estimate body composition using a safe electrical signal that passes through the body. Since water conducts electricity efficiently, changes in hydration levels can influence the results.

For the most consistent readings:

• Measure at the same time of day.
• Stay normally hydrated.
• Avoid measuring immediately after exercise.
• Wait until after using the bathroom.
• Measure before large meals whenever possible.

IS BMI STILL RELEVANT?

Body Mass Index (BMI) remains a useful population-level screening tool because it compares weight with height. However, it cannot distinguish between muscle, fat, bone or water.

For example, a muscular athlete and someone with a higher body fat percentage may have the same BMI despite having very different body compositions.
